Cycle lane to be created on the Cedacero road between Cartagena and La Azohia

Improvements on the busy winding road which provides access to La Azohía and Isla Plana

Signage and safety features are to be upgraded along a 19-kilometre-long stretch of the RM-E22 road, which winds through the mountains between the city of Cartagena and the coastal villages of Isla Plana and La Azohía, with the Town Hall of Cartagena having confirmed this week that the works contract is being put out to tender, and the project also specifies that one kilometre of the road is to be equipped with a cycle and pedestrian lane.

The budget for this project has been set at precisely 631,363 euros, including a 1-kilometre section at the highest point of Cuestas del Cedacero where the walking and cycling lane will be created. At the same time, signage and road safety features are to be upgraded, cats’ eyes installed and road markings added to the road, all of this in an effort to make the road safer for all users.

Bids for the works contract will be accepted until July 4, and once it is awarded it is anticipated that the work will be completed within four months.

Although this is a winding country road it is the favoured route for all traffic between Cartagena and Puerto de Mazarrón, and is used by an average of over 3,000 vehicles per day – considerably more at weekends and in the summer!
