Students at Las Claras del Mar Menor school take part in photography competition to practise their English
“It’s nice to see a phone being used for something creative rather than a doom scroll”

This spring, art students at the Las Claras del Mar Menor bilingual high school in Los Alcázares took part in a photography competition organised by assistant teacher Jane Murphy, with the winners promised the chance to see their photos published online on Murcia Today.
The competition allowed students to get a taste of what it’s like to compete for real-world stakes while also practising their English as they each had to write a blurb to accompany their photos.
Las Claras has run a very well established and successful bilingual programme for its students for many years, and this activity was geared towards reinforcing this aspect and encouraging them to use their English language skills in a fun and creative way.
“As part of the 1st years’ art course, they study photography,” explained Jane. “As an assistant teacher, I work alongside the art teacher here Jesús Pérez Rosique.
“It’s one thing reading about photography but quite another when it comes to taking an interesting shot. I challenged the students to take a photo of their local area – a photo that represents it, that they feel connected to and proud of – and they didn’t disappoint!”
All the students produced an incredibly high quality of work, showcasing photographic skills such as framing and composition.
“After a difficult decision, I chose four winners from each class,” said Jane. “I was delighted to see the effort, thought and care that they put in. It’s nice to see a phone being used for something creative rather than a doom scroll!”
You can see the four winning entries below, and big congratulations go to the winners and everyone who took part!
1. Álvaro – Palm tree sunrise

“This photo is important to me because every Saturday morning I go to see the sunrise with my mother and we take some photos. This photo means a lot to me because it represents the love I have for my mother and how much I love walking.”
2. Jhoselyn – Mar Menor sunset

“Ahh, the sunset, the sound of birds, the sound of waves breaking against each other, the warm temperature and the flowing air creates the perfect weather, the temperature of the sea, its transparency and the fish lurking happily is perfect, there is nothing more perfect than an ice cream... on this perfect beach.”
3. Inés – Flamingos

“I love a little house that is hidden near the Salinas where I always went with my father on weekends when I was little to see the sunset with that pink water and the flamingos that are very peculiar. I love them because they are very elegant and I feel related to them because I feel that I am quite elegant when it comes to doing things, but anyway, I continue with the subject.
“For me it is also special because when my cousins who do not live here came, I always took them there for a snack or to the restaurant that is very close.”
4. Paula – Beach hut on the sea

“This is my favourite place in my town. In this photo I love the colours in the sunset. The colors of it (pink, yellow and blue) make this sunset unbelievable. I took this photo with my mother on her birthday, and that makes it even more special.”
